Question: Your favorite veggie crumbles for chili and suggestions for cooking in chili.?

I don't like soy burgers for the most part but I didn't like hamburgers made from beef either. One exception I liked the chewier texture in Chili. Bean chilis have been too mushy for me. I want some texture. With that in mind what is your favorite crumble that doesn't taste nasty. I want to be able to feed to a meat eater and not have them notice. When is the best time to add to the chili when cooking or does it matter? After the comment about raw chili I watched a youtube video about it. http:/ / www.youtube.com/ user/ JohnnyRawAppleseed It sounds good as a salsa but I am really looking for cooked chili to enjoy in the cold snow weather. Perhaps one day I will evolve to raw but not yet. |

I usually just use TVP for chili (if anything at all...I do prefer it without any kind of "meat "). TVP has a really meaty kind of texture. All of my non-vegan friends & family love my chili, and if they're having it for the first time, they really can't tell that it's not beef in there. :) If I'm making it in a slow cooker, I add it along with all the other ingredients before I turn the heat on. If I'm making it on the stove, I add it after I've sauteed the onions/ garlic/ spices & added tomatoes & broth, since it needs to absorb liquid in order to be, well, edible. I also like corn & sometimes carrots in my chili, and I add the carrots (fresh, if using) about the same time as the TVP. I usually use canned beans, so I add them (and the frozen corn) maybe 15 minutes or so before the chili should be done, so they don't get all mushy from cooking too long. |

Vegemince by realeat. the recipe on the back of the packet. i make raw vegan chillie with ground up vegetables.....but you might not like that. |

Morningstar crumbles work well for my chilis, but I don't think they're vegan anymore (not that that seems to concern you) I cook mine in a crock pot, I always put the crumbles in first, let them thaw, then put in the other ingredients (except the beans, those go in last, after it's cooked for an hour or so). Ten minutes before I'm ready to eat I put the beans in. Keeps them from overcooking; tastes great! None of my meat eating friends know the difference, and my vegetarian friends all double check with me that it's really vegetarian. haha |

The only things I like in my chili are ground beef, beans, and tomatoes. |
